Protomelas fenestratus "Border"

Protomelas fenestratus is a species with a lot of geographic variants which can be found all around the lake in intermediate zones from rocks to sand, also in rocky environments which are richly covered with sediment. All these variants have their own specific color pattern and also different trade names, like "Border" is one of them, which can be found near the border (Border) of Malawi with Mozambique, northern from Gome.

In the lake the males of these species can grow to 14 cm, in the aquarium however they can grow a little taller because of a good feeding. The males can then grow to about 15 cm, females grow to about 12 cm.

Protomelas fenestratus is a quiet, peaceful cichlid which can be hold best with multiple females in a large tank with a lot of swimming space and enough hiding places. It`s possible to keep them together with peaceful mbunas but it`s necessary there`s enough space for them.

In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with invertebrates which they find in the sand, by "blowing" in the sand, in which they hide. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix.
